Everything changed the moment I realized I AM worthy of choosing myself.

When people ask me what made me stay sober one more day, they usually expect me to say it was my children. Others assume it was my health, or that something dramatic finally happened that pushed me to change.

While that would sound easier for people to comprehend, my story is much more powerful than that.

I made a vow.

I made a promise to Orunmila, to my Spirit Guides, to my faith, to my spirituality, and to the unseen presence that had supported me all of these years. I knew they were my greatest support system and have grown even more as a result of this vow for us. I remember saying, "If you help me out of this place, I will never go back to being the person who could no longer honor the life I know I was created to live."

That promise changed everything because there had been many times before when I'd made the same promise without truly meaning it. I have no idea who I thought I was fooling.

This vow wasn't just to them I had finally given my word to the one person I could no longer abandon...myself.

People are sometimes surprised when I tell them I didn't choose sobriety for my children.

Of course I love my children with everything I have, and I'm grateful they get to know this version of me but they weren't the reason I stayed sober. I did because I finally realized I was worth choosing. For so much of my life, I poured myself into everyone else. I wanted to be the dependable one, the helper, the giver, the person who could carry whatever life placed on my shoulders. I realized that I wasn't giving that same love and grace to myself.

Sobriety held me through that understanding and it wasn't always comfortable but I was even more honest with myself than I had ever been.

One of the greatest lessons recovery taught me is that choosing yourself is as necessary as the air we breathe. There may be seasons when protecting your peace means saying no more often than yes, declining invitations, disconnecting from people who don't understand your journey, or stepping away from the noise while you learn how to hear your own voice again.

That's the greatest step to healing.

I also know that not everyone shares my spiritual beliefs, and I respect that completely. For me, prayer became my lifeline and creative journaling was my anchor to release. For someone else, it may be meditation, journaling, therapy, or having an honest conversation with the person they hope to become.

If you don't know what you believe right now, that's okay. This is your journey, and you get to rewrite the narrative. Talk to your future self, and tell them how much it hurts. Tell them you're tired, what you're afraid of, and the life you will build, even if you can't fully picture it yet.

The first step toward healing is refusing to carry everything alone.

One of the greatest realizations I came to was that I wasn't concerned with how anyone else recovered. This was my process. I got to decide what healing looked like for me, how it would unfold, and where it would lead me. I didn't have any desire to want all of the answers on day one. I didn't need a five-year plan or to know who I'd become after one year, or even after the first month. Some days, all I needed to do was stay present and focused on what was right in front of me.

In those early months, creative journaling became one of the greatest gifts I could have given myself. It gave me somewhere to pour the emotions I had spent years trying to numb. It helped me reconnect with the curious, imaginative part of myself that had been waiting for me to come back. In my healing process, I didn't want to become someone else, I wanted to remember how powerful I AM.

If there's one thing I hope you take from my story, is that I pray you choose yourself.

That you don't choose this path because someone else asked you to. I hope you give yourself tons of grace and realize that you don't have to prove you are worthy or that because others want to impose their own projections upon you. I hope you don't do it because you think everyone else deserves the healthier version of you more than you do. Choose yourself because YOU deserve to experience the life that's waiting on the other side of the decision you're afraid to make.

You are worth choosing. You always have been and you always will be. I AM proud of you in advance, friend.

A Question to Leave With You: When was the last time you chose yourself without feeling guilty?
