If you've spent any time exploring Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) or holistic wellness, you've likely heard the word chakra (pronounced CHUCK-ruh). These energy centers are often associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
While the chakra system has become increasingly popular, it is also one of the most misunderstood concepts in modern spirituality. Social media often simplifies each chakra into a single color, emotion, or affirmation, when in reality the chakra system is far more interconnected and dynamic. This guide introduces the traditional seven-chakra system, explores its history, explains how the chakras work together, teaches you how to pronounce each Sanskrit name correctly, and shares how Reiki supports the body's energetic system as a whole.
What Are Chakras?
The word chakra (pronounced CHUCK-ruh) comes from the ancient Sanskrit word cakra, meaning wheel or disc.
Rather than referring to physical organs, chakras are understood as subtle centers of energy that help distribute life force throughout the body. While they cannot be seen with the physical eye, they have been described in Eastern spiritual traditions for thousands of years and continue to play an important role in practices such as yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and Reiki.
The seven primary chakras extend from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each chakra is associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual experiences while remaining deeply connected to every other energy center.
The History of the Chakra System
The chakra system originated thousands of years ago in India and is rooted in ancient Hindu philosophical traditions.
Some of the earliest references appear within the Vedas, a collection of sacred Sanskrit texts dating back more than 3,000 years. These teachings were later expanded upon through the Upanishads, Tantric traditions, yoga, and Ayurveda, each offering additional insight into the body's subtle energetic anatomy.
Although many modern illustrations depict seven chakras, historical texts describe numerous energy centers throughout the body. Over time, the seven primary chakras became the most widely recognized framework because they provide a practical way to understand the progression of human development, from our most basic needs for safety and survival to our capacity for intuition, wisdom, and spiritual connection.
Today, this seven-chakra model is commonly used within Reiki and other complementary wellness practices as a way to better understand energetic balance and support overall well-being.
How Do You Pronounce the Seven Chakras?
Many of the chakra names come from Sanskrit, one of the world's oldest written languages. While pronunciation may seem unfamiliar at first, it becomes much easier with practice.
English Name | Sanskrit Name | Pronunciation |
Root Chakra | Muladhara | moo-lah-DAH-rah |
Sacral Chakra | Svadhisthana | svah-dees-TAH-nah |
Solar Plexus Chakra | Manipura | mah-nee-POOR-ah |
Heart Chakra | Anahata | ah-nah-HAH-tah |
Throat Chakra | Vishuddha | vih-SHOO-dhah |
Third Eye Chakra | Ajna | AHJ-nyah |
Crown Chakra | Sahasrara | sah-hahs-RAH-rah |
How Do the Chakras Work?
The seven primary chakras are often described as an interconnected system rather than seven independent centers. Each chakra contributes to the body's energetic balance, influencing and supporting the others in countless ways.
Rather than operating separately, the chakras work together much like the instruments of an orchestra. When one area of the system is challenged, the effects may be felt elsewhere, making it difficult to assume that a particular symptom always points to a single chakra.
For this reason, experienced Reiki practitioners generally approach the energetic system as a whole instead of focusing exclusively on one chakra.
Why Are There Seven Primary Chakras?
The seven primary chakras represent a symbolic journey through the human experience.
Beginning with our need for safety and stability at the Root Chakra, the system gradually expands through creativity, confidence, compassion, communication, intuition, and spiritual awareness until reaching the Crown Chakra.
Although each chakra has its own qualities and themes, none exists in isolation. Together they form a beautifully interconnected energetic system that supports every aspect of our well-being.
Our Approach to Chakra Healing
One of the most common misconceptions about chakra healing is the belief that every symptom has one obvious energetic cause.
For example, someone struggling to express themselves might immediately assume their Throat Chakra requires healing. While this may certainly be part of the picture, the underlying energetic pattern could just as easily be connected to diminished self-confidence associated with the Solar Plexus Chakra, unresolved emotional experiences linked to the Sacral Chakra, survival-based fears connected to the Root Chakra, or a combination of several energy centers working together.
The body's energetic system is wonderfully complex, and healing is rarely as simple as identifying one chakra based on a single symptom. This is one reason why I don't approach Reiki by forcing energy toward one chakra alone.
Instead, I allow Reiki to flow where it is most needed, trusting both the innate wisdom of your body and the natural intelligence of Reiki itself. Rather than directing the healing process, my role is to create a supportive environment where energetic balance can unfold according to your unique needs.

A Final Thought
The seven primary chakras provide a valuable framework for understanding the body's energetic system, but they are only one part of a much larger picture. Rather than viewing each chakra in isolation, Reiki honors the interconnected nature of the body's energy, supporting balance wherever it is needed most.
Whether you're exploring Reiki out of curiosity or considering your first Chakra Healing Experience, remember that healing isn't about finding the "right" chakra, but supporting the whole person with compassion, awareness, and intention.
